The Story of Rich Strike

In 2022, Rich Strike shocked the world by winning the Kentucky Derby at 80–1 odds. But his story began long before the race. His trainer, Eric Reed, endured a devastating barn fire years earlier that claimed the lives of 23 horses at his training facility. Despite overwhelming loss, he rebuilt with faith and resilience.Rich Strike wasn’t even expected to run the Derby—he was added to the lineup at the last minute after another horse scratched. But in a historic upset, he surged from behind and crossed the finish line first, becoming one of the biggest underdog champions in racing history. His victory is a powerful reminder of what can happen when you don’t give up.

🌟 Resilience & Mission
Rich Strike’s story mirrors the spirit of agriculture—rising from hardship, enduring the unexpected, and pressing on with hope. It reflects the heart of our mission at Ag Women Connect Foundation: to stand with our youth, our farmers, and our communities through every season.

The Bible Verse of Joel 2:25 is what I automatically thought of when I heard Rich Strike’s Story. In our lives, we often experience “lost years” — seasons marked by hardship, regret, missed opportunities, or sorrow. Yet, Joel 2:25 reminds us that God is not limited by time or circumstance. He is a Redeemer who can make up for what feels wasted. He is able to bring fresh beginnings, to heal what was broken, and to bless abundantly even after seasons of deep loss. This verse is not merely a promise of material restoration, but a declaration of God’s nature: He is faithful to restore, renew, and redeem every part of our lives surrendered to Him.

Dear Ag Women Connect Community, We are thrilled to invite you to our much-anticipated Kentucky Derby: Day at the Derby on May 3rd at the Tin Top Gin!

The Ag Women Connect Foundation is a national and local 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to supporting youth in agriculture. In the past year, the foundation awarded eight scholarships—two in honor of Cash Mullins, a promising local student from Shallowater, and six Junior Ag Women Connect scholarships to young women in agriculture aged 15–25.

This is such an impressionable age, where recipients are making big life decisions. Scholarships are not limited to those attending college—the foundation also supports individuals pursuing trade schools or learning hands-on skills for a lifelong career in agriculture!

The goal this year is to double the number of scholarships awarded.

Let’s make this day unforgettable as we uplift each other and celebrate our shared passion for agriculture. Join us and be part of this special occasion!
